  • Lana'i - Going Green Location: Lana'i, Hawaii
Description: Hawai'i currently has some of the highest electric utility costs in the nation due to its isolated location and dependence on imported oil for 75% of its electrical generation. To address this issue, Castle & Cooke Hawai'i has engaged in renewable energy generation utilizing its land holdings and expertise to cultivate the abundant natural resources, including wind and sun, that will reduce or stabilize electrical generating cost using fossil fuel in Hawaii. On Lana'i, we developed La Ola, the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in Hawai'i at that time (2008). La Ola is a 1.5 megawatt (MW) facility with a battery storage which will provide up to a 30% penetration into the Lana'i Island grid with 5 MW peak. Expanding on this expertise, we have targeted our O'ahu lands for larger utility scale solar PV development for the O'ahu grid which serves the state's largest population. In Central O'ahu, a 20 MW "Solar Park" is under development. The Mililani South Solar Park will be comprised of four seperately owned 5 MW Solar Farms that will collectively provide clean renewable energy equivalent to power over 6,500 Hawai'i households. And we are continuing to explore additional solar opportunities on our expansive land inventory in Central O'ahu. Castle & Cooke is poised to provide 10-20% of O'ahu's annual electricity demand (the energy equivalent to power over 115,000 households) from clean renewable energy from Lana'i Wind Power. Castle & Cooke has worked cooperatively with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Hawaiian Electric Company (HECo) and the State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) since 2008 to bring 200-400 MW of Lana'i Wind to the people of Hawai'i. Since 2008, Lana'i's wind resource has been validated as one of the premier wind resources in the world and the undersea cable technology to transmit the wind power the relatively short distance between Lana'i and O'ahu has been shown to be a credible solution.
